A wrist injury playing college football is what led the athletic Raphael Longobardi to becoming a doctor and to orthopaedics.
At 18, he found himself in the office of an orthopaedic surgeon who carefully explained to him how the fracture had happened, why, the treatment options that were available to him, and his future playing sports. "It was his thoroughness," Dr. Longobardi said. "He took the time so I could truly understand. That stuck with me."
The course was set: He wanted to become a doctor "who would be there for his patients" and a surgeon "who would get it right the first time."
He earned his M.D. at New York University School of Medicine and completed both his internship (general surgery) and residency (orthopaedic surgery) at NYU Medical Center/Bellevue Hospital Center. Next came a Sports Medicine fellowship at the Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic at the University of Tennessee, which allowed him the hands-on experience to excel, first in college athletics, then in professional sports.
Now one of the leading orthopaedic surgeons in his field, Dr. Longobardi provides "the best care possible" at his office in Hackensack, New Jersey.
He is married and the father of two children.
